Looking for reasons to stay in a haunting or even haunted accommodation in the UK? Everything from posh to budget, we also find you your perfect historic haunt with 5 mini-spotlight solutions.
Here we will dive into local culture, folklore and the suspense of unravelling a secret. Plus 5 Mini Spots to give you ideas on where to stay as a lone-traveller, family bunch or large group.
Staying in a haunted place isn’t for everyone, but for those with an adventurous spirit, it can be an incredibly rewarding and memorable experience. Here are 5 compelling reasons why you should consider booking a night in a haunted location.
- Forget dry textbooks – Staying in a haunted place, is history brought vividly to life. These locations are often ancient, with centuries of stories etched into their very walls. Every creak, every shadow, every cold spot adds to the narrative of real people who lived, loved, and perhaps met their end within those very confines. You’re not just reading about history; you’re stepping into it, experiencing the atmosphere and legends firsthand. It’s a unique opportunity to connect with the past in a way a museum visit simply can’t offer, often revealing lesser-known local tales and folklore. Which I too will do my best for you – in this blog whenever I discover something new and exciting, you can be sure I will be the first to share it with you.
2. A Unique Adrenaline Rush & Thrill – Let’s be honest, part of the appeal is the sheer excitement! For many, the thrill of potentially encountering the unknown is an exhilarating experience that breaks from the mundane. It’s like stepping onto a real-life horror movie set, but you’re the star. That delicious frisson of fear, the heightened senses, and the “what if?” factor can make for an unforgettable, heart-pumping night that you’ll be recounting to friends for years to come. It’s a safe way to flirt with the supernatural and test your own nerves. This happened to me when visiting Highgate Cemetery in London, the guide announced something new and special on the tour for the first time that day – ‘Who would like to see a dead body?” he said quite casually.

- Unforgettable Memories & Bragging Rights – How many people can say they spent a night in a Castle with a resident ghost, or an Inn where highwaymen once plotted? Staying in a haunted location guarantees a unique story and truly memorable experience. Even if you don’t encounter anything overtly supernatural, the distinct atmosphere, the architectural beauty, and the knowledge of its eerie reputation will set it apart from any other hotel stay. It’s a fantastic conversation starter and gives you those all-important bragging rights!

- A Dive into Local Culture & Folklore – Haunted places are often deeply intertwined with local legends, myths, and folklore. By staying in one, you gain a richer understanding of the area’s cultural heritage. Innkeepers and locals are often keen to share tales, providing insights into the superstitions, historical events, and enduring beliefs that have shaped the community over time. It’s a way to peel back the layers of a place and discover its more mysterious, intriguing side, far beyond the typical tourist attractions.
5. Gain a deeply personal and unconventional perspective on human experience – The stories of ghosts often speak to universal themes of love, loss, betrayal, triumph, or tragedy. Experiencing a “haunting” can provide a profoundly intimate and unique lens through which to contemplate these aspects of the human condition, often from the perspective of those who lived—and perhaps died— in less documented circumstances. Mystery and its allure is something everyone loves, the most popular TV shows today are about detectives solving crimes. Everyone is gripped by the suspense of unravelling the secret.
When I was a kid my sisters and I spent a long time wondering what was behind the locked door in my Aunties house. “No one is allowed in there!” she would bellow if our little gang of nosey sleuths got anywhere near the door. Terrified we were of her and the image of what was behind the door.
We later found out as grown ups; it was the ‘posh’ room, kept only for laying out dead relatives, funerals and the rare marked occasions when ‘special’ (only seen once in a blue moon) family were visiting.

5 Good Reasons the UK do Hotel Stays and Other Accommodation Better Than Anyone Else
The UK’s accommodation scene really does have a special charm and several unique strengths, and here are my 5 good reasons why the UK often does hotel stays and other accommodation better than anyone else –
- Unrivalled Historical Character & Diversity – The UK boasts an unparalleled range of truly historic accommodations that aren’t just old, but alive with centuries of stories. From medieval coaching Inns with wonky beams and secret passages to grand Victorian country estates and authentic castles, you can literally sleep in history here.
While other countries have old buildings, the sheer density and accessibility of these varied historical properties – often still operating as hotels or B&B’s – is exceptional. You can find everything from a 12th-century Inn to a quirky themed hotel in a converted lighthouse, offering a unique sense of place and narrative that’s hard to replicate.

- The ‘Full English’ & Beyond – A Culinary Commitment: While not every stay will be a Michelin-starred experience, the UK generally takes its breakfast very seriously. The “Full English” (or Scottish, Welsh, Irish) breakfast is a national institution, and many accommodations, from humble B&B’s to luxury hotels, pride themselves on offering a hearty, locally sourced start to your day.
Side note – I won’t name them here in case I get your expectations up and they now, do not do this – but staying at a beautiful refurbished castle in the Scottish lowlands, I was introduced to whiskey on my porridge – This was waiting for me at the buffet breakfast in a largish jug just ready for pouring onto my bowl of porridge along the double cream of course! Now that’s what I call getting set-up for the day!
- Beyond breakfast, the pub-with-rooms tradition means you often have fantastic, authentic food and drink right on your doorstep, fostering a convivial atmosphere that’s quintessentially British and deeply comforting after a day of exploring.
The roots of the ‘Full English’ likely go back to the early middle ages, symbolising hospitality and generosity, when eating was a shared experience. Breakfast was an important meal, and meats, bread, and eggs would have been a good way of getting your calories and setting you up for a full day’s work. When shared with travellers or others, the kindness and welcome would have been gratefully received.

- The Art of the B&B and Guesthouse – While hotels are great, the UK truly shines in its Bed & Breakfast and guesthouse sector. These aren’t just budget options; they often offer a wonderfully personal and warm hospitality experience that larger hotels struggle to match. Run by passionate owners who often provide insider tips, homemade treats, and a genuine interest in your stay, B&B’s provide a ‘home away from home’ feeling. It’s a chance to connect with local life and receive a level of individual care and attention that makes a huge difference to the overall experience.
5. Exceptional Access to Nature & Dark Skies (and often, a Pub!) – The UK offers a remarkable balance between urban vibrancy and accessible natural beauty, and its accommodation reflects this. You can be in a bustling city one day and, within a short train or car ride, find yourself in a national park or an AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty). Many UK accommodations are strategically located to maximise access to stunning landscapes, coastal paths, and, increasingly, incredible dark sky reserves.
Crucially, many of these rural gems – be they boutique hotels, traditional Inns, or even glamping sites – are often within walking distance of a welcoming pub, cafe or restaurant, meaning you can enjoy breathtaking scenery during the day and a cosy pint by a roaring fire in the evening.
This seamless blend of nature, comfort, and local culture is a standout feature of UK stays. History, mystery and either elegance or a more simple stay in this green and pleasant country can get you to your perfect destination.
